Can eco-leather get wet?

Eco-leather can get wet, but it’s not a good thing and you should try to avoid it as much as possible. When eco-leather gets wet, it can lead to several problems.

If eco-leather comes into contact with water, like when it rains and your eco-leather shoes or bag get wet, the water can seep into the material. Once inside, it might make the leather swell or change its shape. For example, if you have an eco-leather wallet and it gets soaked in water, when it dries, it could become distorted and not close properly anymore.

Also, moisture trapped inside the eco-leather can create an ideal environment for mold and mildew to grow. These can not only damage the appearance of the leather by leaving stains and unpleasant smells but also weaken the structure of the leather over time. You might notice some black or greenish spots appearing on the wet eco-leather if mold starts to form, and that’s really hard to get rid of completely.

However, if your eco-leather item does accidentally get wet, don’t panic. The first thing you should do is to gently wipe off the excess water with a clean, dry cloth as soon as possible. Try to absorb as much water as you can from the surface. Then, let it air dry in a well-ventilated area. Don’t put it near a heat source like a radiator or use a hairdryer on it right away because the sudden heat can cause the leather to crack or the finish to peel off.

In general, while eco-leather can withstand a little bit of moisture now and then, it’s best to keep it dry in normal circumstances to maintain its quality and prolong its lifespan. So, it’s always a good idea to protect it from getting wet by using waterproof sprays or keeping it covered when you know it might be exposed to water.
