What are the disadvantages of microfiber?

Microfiber has several disadvantages that we should be aware of.

First of all, microfiber is a synthetic material, and it's not biodegradable. When we throw away microfiber products after using them, they just pile up in landfills. They can stay there for hundreds of years without breaking down naturally. For example, old microfiber clothes or cleaning cloths that we don't need anymore will take up space in the landfill and contribute to the waste problem instead of decomposing like organic materials do.

Secondly, during the washing process, microfiber tends to shed tiny fibers. These fibers are so small that they can pass through the filters of our washing machines and then flow into the wastewater. Eventually, they end up in rivers, lakes, or oceans. Once in the water, they can be harmful to aquatic life. Fish and other water organisms might mistake these microfibers for food and swallow them, which can cause problems with their digestion and overall health.

Also, microfiber is often not as breathable as natural fabrics. When we wear microfiber clothing, especially in hot weather or when we are doing physical activities that make us sweat, we can feel quite stuffy. The sweat doesn't evaporate as quickly as it would with natural materials like cotton. So we might end up feeling uncomfortable and sweaty for a long time.

Moreover, some people with sensitive skin might have issues with microfiber. The chemicals used in the manufacturing process of microfiber can sometimes cause skin irritations. For instance, wearing a microfiber shirt might make someone's skin itchy or lead to a rash if they have an allergic reaction to the substances in the fabric.

Another drawback is that the durability of microfiber can vary a lot. While some high-quality microfiber products can last for a while, there are also many low-quality ones that wear out quickly. For example, a cheap microfiber towel might start to lose its softness and become thin after just a few uses and washes.
