How to patch faux leather furniture
When your faux leather furniture gets damaged and needs patching, here’s what you can do. First, you must clean the damaged area really well. Use a soft cloth and some mild soap mixed with warm water to gently wipe the area where the patch will go. This gets rid of any dirt, dust or stains that could stop the patch from sticking properly. Then let it dry completely. You don’t want any moisture left on the surface when you start patching.
Next, look at the size and shape of the damage. If there’s a tear or a hole, carefully trim the edges around it with a pair of small scissors. Make the edges as smooth as possible so that the patch can lie flat and blend in better. Don’t cut too much of the existing faux leather though, just enough to make the area neat.
Now, you need to find a suitable patch material. Try to get a piece of faux leather that’s as close as possible to the color and texture of the furniture you’re fixing. You can sometimes buy faux leather patches from craft stores or online. Cut the patch to a size that’s a bit larger than the damaged area. This gives you some extra material to work with and ensures full coverage.
After that, apply a good quality faux leather adhesive. You can use a small brush to spread a thin layer of the adhesive evenly on both the back of the patch and the damaged area on the furniture. Make sure every part is covered but don’t use too much adhesive as it could seep out and make a mess.
Then carefully place the patch over the damaged spot and press it down firmly. Use a clean cloth to smooth it out from the center towards the edges. This helps to get rid of any air bubbles that might be trapped under the patch and makes it stick well. Let the adhesive dry completely. The drying time usually depends on the type of adhesive you’re using but it might take a few hours.
Once the patch is dry, you can take a look at it and see if there are any rough edges or if it’s not as seamless as you’d like. If needed, you can use a small amount of matching faux leather paint or dye to touch up the edges and make the patch blend in even better. Just be careful not to apply too much paint or dye at once.
