Can I wear synthetic leather in the rain?

You can wear synthetic leather in the rain, but there are some things you need to be careful about.

Synthetic leather is usually more resistant to water compared to genuine leather in some ways. When you are caught in a light rain while wearing synthetic leather shoes or a jacket, it won’t get soaked as quickly as real leather would. The water might bead up on the surface and roll off to some extent. For example, if you are walking from your car to a building in a drizzle and you have on synthetic leather boots, chances are that the boots will still look okay when you reach your destination and you can just wipe off the little moisture on them.

However, it doesn’t mean that synthetic leather is completely waterproof. If you stay in the rain for a long time or if it’s a heavy downpour, the water will eventually start to seep through. Once the water gets inside, it can make the inside of your shoes wet or dampen the lining of your jacket, which won’t be comfortable. Also, if the synthetic leather gets wet frequently, it can affect its quality over time. The color might fade a little bit after multiple exposures to rain and the material could start to lose its shape or even develop a funny smell.

After wearing synthetic leather in the rain, it’s important to take proper care of it. You should let it dry naturally in a well-ventilated area. Don’t put it near a heat source like a radiator or use a hair dryer on it right away as the heat can damage the synthetic material. Gently wipe off any excess water with a soft cloth while it’s still wet. If you have a synthetic leather bag that got wet in the rain, empty it out and let it air dry inside and out.

In general, wearing synthetic leather in the rain is possible for short periods and light rain situations, but you have to be aware of how to handle it afterwards to keep it in good condition and make sure it lasts longer.
